It is widely aware of the circumstance that Beijing has a large population, serioustraffic jams and is lack of resources. It’s not rigorous to attribute overpopulation to themorass. Beijing’s population pressure is more manifested in relative congestion of thespatial distribution. The distribution pattern of the permanent residential population couldbe understood from an overall geographical perspective, however, the intrinsicmechanisms and the direct causes of the overcrowding are difficult to sort out.The residential population and the workplace population are used as the researchobjects, and the spatial distribution of population in residential places and workplaces isrespectively studied. The spatial distribution of population in these two areas is intuitivelydescribed by the geographic information software MapInfo, in which way itscharacteristics could consequently be summed up.The distribution pattern of population in residential places and workplaces fit withMATLAB Curve Fitting Toolbox, where the differences of population spatial distributionbetween the two could be summed up and the mutual divestiture trend could be found out.The conclusion is that the geographical scope of workplace is relatively narrower, whilethat of residential places is expanding, moreover, the distance from the center r, hasdifferent impacts on the population density of the two places. The differences of spatialdistribution lying between residential population and workplace population directly lead toa series of problems such as long commuting time of Beijing office workers, long peakhours of urban traffic congestion, price surge on specific regions, shortage of housing, lossof infrastructure configuration degrees, the anomie of urban construction and managementand so on.The mechanism of how the center of Beijing city impacts on the distribution ofpopulation in residential places and workplaces is understood through comparative analysisand summary interpretation, as well as the distribution characteristics of and differencesbetween population density in these two areas. The arduous task is recognized to relieveurban management issues such as population pressure, traffic congestion, housingdifficulties and so on. Theoretical support and practical guidelines are provided for Beijingto improve population management policies and to optimize urban management measures.
