In the information age, computer games, as the representation of new entertainment culture, have become one of the most important entertainments of teenagers, and they are influencing their learning, living and cognizing ways. while worrying about the negative effects computer games may have on teenagers, scholars are also trying to figure out why they are so popular among young people.Educational games may stimulate students' interest in learning and develop students' inquisitive capacity. Also, students release themselves in the games screen. Thereby, educational games will enhance the quality of learning and learning efficiency.English teaching emphasize "input" and "output" of language and "feedback" of learning, and educational games is situational, exploratory, experiencing, co-operative and outward, so educational games have absolute advantage in the application of English teaching. But how to use English educational games effectively and if there are some shortcomings in the existing English educational games and what they are - all these questions deserve our research.On the basis of a literature review and an analysis of existing computer games for English learning, this thesis identifies three application modes and explores their application in English teaching. This thesis adopts the following research methods: literature studies, online survey, questionnaires and interviews.Based on the overview of the features and values of educational games, this thesis elaborates the research and application situation of English educational games and analyses its advantages and shortcomings, then points out its great values in the application of English teaching, and under this premise, discusses the educational values and application problems of a flash English educational games website, named "learn English by playing games". Then this thesis designs, experiments and evaluates on an English phonetics teaching plan using some computer games of this website. The conclusing section summarises the research and puts forward suggestions for future studies.
