A Study Of Basketball Athletes' Intelligence Measurement From Theoretical And Empirical Perspective

The intelligence of the athletes has close relationship with talents selection, training and even the athletes'performance, so the present research in this field is meaningful and has practical values. However, the previous researches usually adopted traditional ways of evaluation methods, which is paper test, and were far from satisfactory. In addition, they ignored the discussion of the theories and required in-depth research.Based on the systematic review of the domestic and foreign researches on the athletes'intelligence, the present study uses questionnaires to describe characteristics of the basketball athletes'intelligence, including the speed of information processing, cognitive style, and cognitive strategies.This study uses the instruments of RT-MT Detector and volleyball computer information processing speed test system designed by Ge Chunlin to test basketball athletes'speed of information processing. Graphic design mosaic approach developed Psychology Department at Beijing Normal University is adpoted to examine athletes'cognitive style. To investigate the use of cognitive strategies by basketball althetes, the current study employs the self-designed questionnaire according to the eight characteristics of cognitive strategies proposed by Ge Chunlin.In the part of experimental studies, the study tests the speed of information processing, cognitive style, and cognitive strategies of first-class basketball athletes, students whose major is physical education and the students whose major is not sports and analyzes the results through statistical analysis.The detailed results of the investigation and experimental studies are as follows:1. The intelligence of the basketball athletes is a special kind of cognitive ability, which is greatly different from others. This cognitive ability developed on the basis of physical grow-up, training, contest and other factors related to cognitive ability.2. Basketball athletes specific intelligence is the unity of structure and process, that is, including information processing speed, cognitive style and cognitive response strategy is in three parts.3. As regards the speed of information processing, there is no relationship betweem the simple reaction time of basketball athletes, years of basketball training and the levels of basketball skills. However, male athletes and female athletes have significant differences in reaction time.4. In the information processing speed, the men and women basketball athletes have the choice of reaction time and number of years of basketball, basketball sports level is positively correlated; high-level athletes to determine the accuracy is better than low-level athletes.5. Long time trained athletes response faster to cognitive style shorter than that of short time trained athletes, and tends to be more independent of the field, which indicates high-level athletes use clues to make decisions and has strong organization ablility.
