As an issue that figures prominently in the study of second language acquisition, the problem of vocabulary acquisition is attracting more and more academic concern. Some scholars(Lewis,1993)believe that vocabulary acquisition is the center of second language acquisition. All the language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, etc, must be related to vocabulary. Therefore, vocabulary teaching is the most important of all the links in English language teaching. In order to improve students' communicative competence, the language must be given careful consideration in research. To help students enlarge their vocabulary and improve their lexical competence is the guarantee of the improvement of English language teaching.Based on the functional-notional theory, this thesis takes the methods of integrated, analytic research, inductively and qualitatively constructs the middle school English vocabulary network from perspective of functional-notional . The thesis content mainly involves the concept of functional-notional, the concept of vocabulary network, the concept of functional-notional syllabus, the connection between the perspective of functional-notional and the vocabulary network, the necessity and feasibility of the vocabulary network construction in the middle school English teaching, the assistance construction of middle school student English vocabulary network from perspective of functional-notional , as well as the independent construction of middle school student English vocabulary network from perspective of functional-notional., and the research on the classroom method of the middle school students' English vocabulary network from perspective of functional-notional. And the results indicate that the construct of the middle school English vocabulary network from perspective of functional-notional is both necessary and feasible. Since the perspective of functional-notional emphasizes the classification of language in accordance with functions and notions, it requires a more firm and close relation between word families and vocabulary network. Vocabulary network is the structure of brain which represents a speakers' vocabulary knowledge in the way of detail, the clarity, relevance and network chart. Obviously the perspective of functional-notional has very influence upon the development of English vocabulary network; Conscious changes of the teaching methods and the patterns in the middle school English teaching may raise the student's English proficiency to a great extent. In the last part of thesis, some suggestions and advice are also given in order to cope with the problems in question.
