The approach of ideological and political education is a key to the effect of ideological and political education and deeply influences the implementation of the objective, task and content of ideological and political education. The approaches of ideological and political education both in China and America have their own advantages and characteristics. The paper compares the methods of ideological and political education adopted by China and America in different social system and historical cultural background, with an aim to find their similarities and differences and explore the reason of existing similarities and differences with deep analysis. The paper is designed to assimilate and draw from the successful experiences of the ideological and political education in America, to enrich and perfect the present ideological and political system of China.The paper firstly uses comparative method to undertake a comprehensive and profound comparison about the similarities and differences of ideological and political education between Chinese and American family education, school education and social education. It reveals from the common point of view that both the two countries emphasize on the importance of ideological and political education in spite of their difference in social system. In the aspect of family education, both China and America emphasize on the fundamental role, pertinence and integrity of family education. As school education, there exists commonalities in its emphasis on classroom teaching, extra-curriculum activities and the demonstration role of teachers, school cultural construction, and mental consultation and so on. As to social education, both the two countries emphasize on the guidance role of mass media and practical education, requiring the whole society to involve in ideological and political education. From the perspective of existing difference, idea, objective, content, mode and result of family education between China and America are not quite similar. The differences between China and America in school education mostly are reflected from the curriculum provision, teaching method, extra-curriculum activities and the comprehensive guidance extent of the educated. The differences in social education are mostly manifested in the disparity of the role of religion, mass media orientation and social ideological and political education. Based on the above analysis, the paper further explores the reason of the existing similarities and differences between Chinese and American ideological and political education as well as its development tendency. In the end, the paper utilizes the stance, opinion and method of dialectical materialism, and proposes the useful experiences drawn from the ideological and political education in America as well as the methods to optimize Chinese ideological and political education based on premise of adhering to scientific principles.
