"Appraisal of excellence"among primary and middle school students is only a minor thing which is always be ignored in teaching activities. However, sometimes it finds favor in eyes of teachers, students, parents and even the society, deriving certain educational social problems. This has aroused researchers to explore it from a new view, expecting to further reveal it, attracting more considerations on it.This study is supported by the theory of power and control and symbol theory in sociology, investigates and researches the phenomenon of"appraisal of excellence"among primary and middle school students from the view of sociology, summarizes the features and functions of"appraisal of excellence", establishing excellent appraisal system to make students develop more healthily"appraisal of excellence"and overall with comprehensive evaluation system, effectively taking advantage of education's good social cycle effect. Meanwhile, the study also finds problems in"appraisal of excellence", preventing or containing the bad effect from spreading, providing new vision and reference for future analysis and solutions of the problem to educators and administrators.This study takes Class 2, Grade 5 of Z Primary School in Z city in Henan province as its researching object. It conducts a qualitative research. It goes deep into the daily life of the school, communicating with teachers, students and parents in more ways, collecting massive materials with the quality method, keeping personal feelings and thoughts in means of interviewing, truly representing the process of"appraisal of excellence", summarizing features and functions of this activity. It explores the hidden educational significance and value of the materials by using sociological theories. Using observation, interviews and material objects to collect researching materials, although the research findings are not be expected to be universal and representative, they are expected to be references for people and things out of this study.This study consists of five parts:Part one is the introduction, mainly discussing reasons for the research, defining related concepts and theory foundations, briefly introducing the historical origins of"appraisal of excellence"and related researches, formulating the purpose and significance of the research, putting forward researching methods.Part two sums up six features of"appraisal of excellence": social nature, symbolic nature, model, standardization, selection and control as well as the positive function, negative function and overall function of it.Part three mainly describes the mechanism of"appraisal of excellence"among primary and middle school students. The examples of interviewed schools, teachers and students, parents before, in course of and after"appraisal of excellence"reflect the hidden social problem behind it.Part four makes deep interpretation of"appraisal of excellence". On the basis of long-term observation to elementary and middle school students and depth interviews, combining the existing sociological theories, it indicates in the realm of school, the secret separation of the reproduction of cultural capital to students, the influence of habit on families and the exchanging between teachers and students in classes dominated by teacher as well campus culture passing on,"appraisal of excellence"among primary and middle school students and the education fair to escape the shackles, to the education of the truth etc.In the closing part, it reflects on"appraisal of excellence", trying to make proposal on the problems in it, hoping to arouse more concern of educational professionals.
