The dissertation is an attempt to deal with two issues. Firstly, what are the complicated relations between the development of the discipline institution of university and all kinds of authority factors from states, universities, professors, society and knowledge? How do all kinds of authority lead to and control the transition of the discipline institution of university in China and western countries? Secondly, How is the operation of the discipline institution of university affected by all kinds of authority? What is the mechanism of it? From the perspective of the authority, the development and operation of the discipline institution of university in China and Western countries are analyzed. Finally, two valuable conclusions are given.The dissertation is composed of five chapters: The introductory part discusses the research significance of the discipline institution of university, reviews the correlated research progress and the corresponding issues in existence, presents the research frame of the dissertation, and demonstrates the practicability and necessity of the research of the discipline institution of university from the perspective of the authority and regarding the control and grade as the point of tangency. In chapter one, the concepts of discipline, discipline of university, discipline institution of university and authority are defined. In chapter two and three, the development history of the discipline institution of university is reviewed. The forces resulted in the transition of the discipline institution of university, which are hidden in the transition of discipline institution of university in the China and western countries, are explored. The authority controlling and molding the process of the transition of the discipline institution of university is discussed. That is to say, what complicated connections are there between the discipline institution, in the transition process, and all kinds of authorities? How does the discipline institution change consistently with the transition of the authorities? For instance, with the transition of the knowledge authority from the theologist and metaphysician to modern scientist, the disciplines of university have their ebb and flow accordingly. The confrontation or cooperation or compromise of all kinds of authorities has portrayed a soul-stirring picture of the history of discipline institution. Chapter four and five focuses on the discipline institution, concretely exploring how the operation of the admittance and grading institution of the discipline is controlled by the authority. For example, which disciplinemay have access to the discipline system of university? Who exercise the authority of the admittance of the discipline? What are the principles of the admittance of the discipline? What models and strategies help break through the control of the authority so as to get an admittance of the discipline? Why are disciplines with equal admittance unequal in status in the university? What causes the different status of the disciplines? What kinds of control of authority are involved? What influence is brought by the stratified status between the preferential disciplines and inferior disciplines to the development of knowledge, human beings and society? In the conclusion part, the possibility and approach of the transition of the discipline institution of university are pointed out.The chief points of view of the dissertation are as follows. First, the authority is not only productive but also repressive to the disciplines of university. On the one hand, the authority causes the creation of neo-discipline, promotes the evolution of the discipline institution of university and brings the progress of knowledge and society. On the other hand, the authority suppresses the growth of some knowledge system, making it very difficult for some discipline to obtain the admittance, or to acquire resource for development although they have obtained the admittance. Therefore, as far as the discipline institution of university is concerned, the control of authority is not the object to be thoroughly criticized and eliminated, but the element to be coordinated and balanced. Second, there are many factors of the control of authority in the operation model and process of the discipline institution of university. It is the authority that affects and controls the transition of the discipline of university. Thus, it is very necessary to clear the mechanism which leads to the abuse and monopoly of the authority, to doubt and overset the structure of former authority and the validity of authorized standard, or to reconstruct the structure of the authority and the authorized standard so as to reform the discipline institution of university and get rid of the malpractice and predicament.
