The Study Of The Core Competence Of Characteristic-Oriented Universities In China

Nowadays, Chinese universities confronts with a tougher competition than ever as the higher education becomes more and more acceptable and accessible in China; thereby questions on how to improve the core competition of universities arises as a limelight. In this case, characteristic-oriented universities, which were built in and after the anti-Japanese war by reconstructing and merging universities, and has made a great contribution to Chinese economic and cultural construction, faces the same questions as well. Specifically, in the new trend of university development, both the function, system and the development environment of universities have changed as the adjustment of national policies. Therefore, characteristic-oriented universities have to shift their traditional development road to a new one, where in demand of either their inner development or the competition against other universities, it is emergent for them to positively seize opportunities and accept challenges, promoting its core competition by proper strategies.Nevertheless, the investigation on the core competition of characteristic-oriented universities is limited within a general discussion, without an actual theoretic-based analysis. As what has been said, characteristic-oriented universities have gone through a short but special experience of emerge and reconstruction, yet some historical problems left and restricting their development, along with the process of institutional reform in universities. On this point, researches on the core competition of special universities are helpful, for it provides a relevant theory-based solution to promote the competitive force and sustainable development of characteristic-oriented universities; thus there is a need to apply the systematic theory to the practical strategies in developing featured universities. According to the present dissertation, a main drive to improve the core competition of characteristic-oriented universities lies in their special features, underlying and reinforcing the features from every side. For this purpose, a case study is undertaken at first by focusing on a characteristic-oriented university, where enlightenments are based on the elements of that characteristic-oriented university. Then, drawing on the experience of successfully reformed western universities with the similar background, the present study attempts to build a development road with points stressed on 'strategic management','optimizing structure','accelerating innovation' and 'creating cultural landscape' of characteristic-oriented universities. In conclusion, the present research concentrates in the core competition of characteristic-oriented universities from both theoretical and empirical sides, with the aim set at promoting the development of characteristic-oriented universities in a healthy and sustainable way.
