English is the most widely used language in international economy, technology and communication and is also the major foreign language taught in China's basic education. The experimental version of New Senior English for China has been used in Jilin Province since the autumn term of 2007 and now the old version of the English textbook has been completely replaced by the experimental one. NSEFC is the most widely used senior English textbook in China, but up till now, there has been little evaluation of the experimental version. After a literature review of English textbooks and related evaluation theories, my thesis summarizes and analyses three major foreign material evaluation theories, namely those of Cunningsworth, McDonough & Shaw and Breen & Candlin and accordingly evaluates NSEFC from the following three aspects:1. whether NSEFC meets the demands of the New Curriculum Standards for Senior English2. whether NSEFC satisfies the requirements of teachers'teaching3. whether NSEFC meets the needs of students'learning My study adopts a research method which combines qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. First, by analyzing the texts, a comparison is made between NSEFC and the old text book from the aspects of topics, functional items and structures in order to find out about the advantages of NSEFC. Second, there is a comparison between NSEFC and the New Curriculum Standards so as to discuss whether NSEFC meets the demands of the New Curriculum Standards for Senior English. Finally, surveys in the form of questionnaires and interviews are carried out among teachers and students to discover their attitudes towards NSEFC. Through the surveys, it is evident that teachers and students generally agree on the following aspects:1. The amount of knowledge in NSEFC is adequate, which meets most teachers'and students'requirements and the knowledge is at a suitable level.2. NSEFC reflects the basic principles of the curriculum reform and meets the targets set by the New Curriculum Standards.3. Problems of NSEFC are pointed out and suggestions for improvement are offered.Based on the findings of the research, suggestions are offered to teachers:1. Study NSEFC carefully to make good use of it.2. Understand that students are the major force in carrying out the curriculum and the textbook.3. Take into consideration students at various levels and work for the progress of all of them. A suggestion is put forward to the department concerned that there should be reforms in the testing system to ensure the effect of the teaching of listening and speaking. To the editors, the following suggestions are offered:1. Be close to students'real life to motivate them.2. Make the listening as authentic as possible.3. Increase hot topics to make students more aware of currents affairs and thus develop their ability to express themselves.4. Writing tasks should be closely related to the Curriculum Standards.5. Make efforts to eradicate mistakes.
