The voice of the difficulty in assessing compositions echoes each other among Chinese teachers. Its results have developed direct influence on the effect of composition teaching, into the influence on the students for their development of writing skills.The article, from the view of the new curriculum reform in our country, based on the current condition of composition assessment in primary and secondary school, revolving around the requirements to new curriculum, analyses causes of the "high consumption but low efficiency" circumstance in composition teaching. Meanwhile, it makes a definition on the conception of composition assessment, specifies the natures of it, and expounds the method theory used in composition assessment and its foundation.In order to support the article with more profound theories, get beneficent enlightenment on composition assessment, it reviews the history of the development of composition assessment, including the ideas from Tangbiao, Liangqichao, Yechengtao, Lvshuxiang, Yuyi, Qianmenglong, Zhangzhongxing,etc., then concludes new appraisals and analysis.In 1990s, the methods of assessing composition have contained the ideas of new curriculum standards. Both these methods and concepts are meaningful for us today to use for reference, so this article mainly introduces essay scoring method and composition of floating sub-sub-integral method. Finally, it explains the effective general methods of composition assessment based on the new curriculum standards and its new trends. The general methods are: teachers' selective face to face assessing, students' self-assessing, the combination of mutual assessing, the association with text books while assessing. The new trends are: the use of network, tape, portfolio while doing assessment.To conclude, this article not only makes an interpretation of composition assessment through theory, but also introduces many practical methods through pragmatics. It serves as a reference and reflection to our peers in this field.
