Virtual plant is to simulate the plant growth and the development in three-dimensional space by computers. With the development of the computer graphics technology, the virtual plant is investigated gradually in depth. As the plant growth environment is extremely complex, in order to simulate realistically, the impact of the external environment on plants should be considered when we study on the virtual plants. Since virtual plant is a cross-disciplinary research area, involving graphics, botany, mathematics, education and many other disciplines of knowledge, it has attracted the concern of experts in various fields. Virtual plant is widely applicated in agriculture and entertainment areas particularly in education. Many institutes have developed virtual laboratories and other related softwares, which promote the progress of modern education. In this paper, the system is realized by developing three-dimensional graphics applications in the Window XP operating system based on Visual C + + and OpenGL database. Firstly, this paper has deeply analyzed the current status of the virtual plant research home and abroad, and introduced the computer graphics theory, plant modeling, Bézier curves, Bézier surfaces and botany knowledge related to the virtual simulation of plant growth. Secondly, we deeply explored the knowledge of Bézier curves and Bézier surfaces, by use of which the model of cherry blossoms and sepal was established, then established the model of cherry inflorescence growth process based on improved L systems. Thirdly, based on the established growth model of a cherry tree under lighting conditions, we investigated the impact of the external environment on plant growth by encoding with program development tools. Finally, we applied the virtual plant to biological experiments teaching, and summed up the significance of virtual plants in biological experiments teaching. The summary of this work and prospect of the future work are stated at the end of this thesis.
