English language sense lies in the personal head, and it is hard to explicate and articulate. As intuition ability, English language sense plays a very important role in the process of perception, understanding and expression of language. And it is important to individual's language acquisition and application. So the research on this field has very important practical value.Based on comprehensive analysis of relative theories and exploring researches in this field, we conducted two connected studies in the research to explore the construction and function of the English language sense. The middle school students in Shandong province participated in this research.Studyâ… To preliminarily formulate questionnaire of English language sense, and to make sure that the questionnaire has rather good validity and reliability in order to make the inventory become appropriate for Chinese middle school students. Based on the test of English language sense questionnaire, we also tried to explore English language sense's construct and general characteristics of Chinese middle school students.Studyâ…¡To explore the relationship of middle school students'English academic performance with their English language sense and English self-efficacy, and provide the suggestion of the role of English language sense and English self-efficacy in students'English academic performance.The findings were following based on the two empirical studies:1. Based on the expert interviews, open-ended questionnaire survey and test paper analysis, we worked out an English language sense questionnaire which contains 44 items. And after item analysis, elements analysis and reliability and validity tests, we preserved 28 items that best fit the demand of statistics.2. The questionnaire of middle school students' English language sense has good validity and reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis testified the structural validity. And they are all meeting the requirements of surveying.3. The main characteristics of Chinese students' English language sense are:The distribution of Chinese students' English language sense approaches the normal distribution. There are significant differences of students'English language sense in gender. Parents' literacy has significant positive correlation with English language sense.4. The main characteristics of Chinese students' English self-efficacy are:The distribution of Chinese students' English self-efficacy approaches the normal distribution.There are significant differences of students'English self-efficacy in gender.Mother's literacy has significant positive correlation with English self-efficacy, but the correlation of father's literacy with English self-efficacy does not achieve significant level.5. English language sense and English self-efficacy can both predict English academic performance. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that English language sense was a more powerful predictor of English academic performance than English self-efficacy in middle school.
