| Learning style is defined as the way in which somebody approaches the acquisition of knowledge and skills, i.e. that an individual learner shows a distinctive and characteristic style when he investigates the accomplishment of his learning tasks. They include not only relative learning skills and the connections among them, but also the psychological factors and psychic forces such as learning habits, learning awareness, learning attitude, learning quality. Most of contemporary undergraduate students have clear learning objectives, but not enough hierarchy; right learning attitude, but not self-discipline. They persue the diversity of learning skills and thus six features of modern learning styles were exhibited, including learning initiative, independence, singularity, problem, cooperation and experience. They prefer exploring new learning skills such as inquiry-based learning, cooperative learning, independent learning, experiential learning, interactive learning. However there are many unscientific aspects in leaning skills, e.g. no adaption to new learning methods, no specific ways of learning for themseves, unreasonable time management. With the increase of international extent in present information era, undergraduate students are making significant changes in learning styles, which are reflected in three aspects: surfing, multimedia teaching and English learning. Undergraduate students are so deeply immersed into the Internet which in turn has a profound influence on learning time, academic performance and leaning styles. While notifying the positive role of the internet, more attention should be paid to the negative effects including false information, junk culture, online games, internet fraud. Multimedia teaching changes the traditional teaching modes and helps undergraduate students acquire new knowledge. However, Multimedia teaching is limited in expression aspects such as language and posture. And other problems could also happen like that, coursewares are not always satisfying, teaching equipments can not be always well maintained, so that undergraduate students expect to have better teaching conditions. Most of undergraduates have positive attitude to English learning and they would like to spend much time on it. But there are still many problems in English learning. For example, being lack of interest, no valid way of learning, no application in daily life, all of which are the reasons that it is hard for undergraduated to love learning English.Learning is a kind of social activity and learning styles are the reflection of individual's ways of thinking and living basically. As important components of learning styles, learning objective, attitude and skills have important role on undergraduates'growth & success. Learning objective affects undergraduates'interest and future developmental level in learning; learning attitude has an influence on their will, behavior and results in learning; learning skills have various effects.Different learning styles have different influences on undergradates'growth & success. These influences have more or less difference due to different gender, age, major. Both male and female undergraduates have clear objectives, positive attitude, though in the latter they show different sytles of expression. As to the most efficient learning skills, they are very similar as that both of them like cooperative and interactive learning. However, male undergraduates prefer independent learning while female undergraduates like inquiry-based learning more, and also there are more male students who often have inquiry-based learning. Learning styles have tight relationship with cognitive levels. Undergraduates in different grades have different learning styles. Learning objectives become clearer and clearer with being more and more familiar with college life. The number of students who do not have clear objectives decreases year by year from the first to the end year of college life. Students in different grades have prominent difference in learning attitude. Freshmen and Senior students are the most diligent, then the junior students, while sophomores are the least. Freshmen are incline to passive learning and they expect to try novel and interesting learning styles such as experience-oriented learning. Sophomores and junior students have already had their own learning skills, everyone have different preference to inquiry-based learning, cooperative learning and independent learning. Senior students have more independent learning and interactive learning. Students in different colleges do not have evident difference on the knowledge of learning objectives while they are prominently different on learning interest. As to learning attitude, it is different for students from different colleges in that. students in normal universities or universities of science and technology are usually more assiduous than those in college of finance and economy.Undergraduate students have so strong plasticity that many approaches could be carried out to help them to grow and to be successful. To help them acquire scientific learning styles, we should not only guide them in the methods, but more importantly, we should also upgrade their learning objectives and improve their learning interest through ideological and political education. Firstly, we should help students have clear learning objectives and right learning attitude, and give phase directions to students in different grades. Secondly, we could help undergraduate students to take advantage of the library to foster their self-study ability. Thirdly, we help the students to make good use of internet, for which they should have civilized and right way for surfing. Fourthly, teaching staff construction should be strengthened through consolidating teachers'responsibilities, improving their qualifications and perfecting inspirit mechanism. Teachers'leading role should be exerted adequately. |
