| After their appearance in China in the middle of 1980s, outdoor sports become popular among people and have a very promising future. Currently, there are about more than one thousand of outdoor sports clubs in China, among of them are about hundreds of formally registered folk clubs, managing mountaineering, rock climbing, outdoor survival, hiking, drifting and other sports. Due to the location in less developed area and slow economy increasing, outdoor sports in Shanxi Province start relatively late. With only few clubs operating for years, the network just beginning, few relating organizations and professionals, the rise and development of outdoor sports obviously lag behind those in developed area and cities.Adopting the methods of literature reviewing, interview and questionnaire, the thesis makes a comprehensive study of the basic theory and the development of outdoor sports from the perspective of sociology. Based on this, the thesis investigates the development of outdoor sports in Shanxi Province and the influencing factors. It also finds out the characteristics of outdoor sports and finally comes up with some suggestions. The research results indicate that: (1) Outdoor sports have become a life style from the means of survival. They have the following characteristics including rich in content, various in form, returning to nature, challenging, exploratory, and emphasizing teamwork. Outdoor sports can satisfy people's need of challenging the limits, and pursuing the excitement, and promoting the interpersonal interaction. Therefore, outdoor sports have the economic value and social regulating value apart from the leisure entertainment value. (2) Due to the late starting,the small scale of participating and limited economic input, the popularization of outdoor sports in Shanxi Province is with heavy burden and the market needs to be developed further. (3) The development of outdoor sports in Shanxi Province is affected by some positive factors such as economic development, life style, health concept, the internet and media and so on. In the meanwhile, they are also restricted by negative factors including imperfect policies and rules, incomplete management system, lack of security and less media propaganda. (4) With the advantages of natural resources, brand effect of outdoor sports events, outdoor sports and the industries in Shanxi Province are very promising. (5) Outdoor sports in Shanxi Province can be further developed by means of the following measures, which are to strengthen publicity work, to exert the function of traditional media, and to foster the consciousness of harmonious relationship between people and nature; to perfect relating policies and rules, to establish complete official management system, to give full play to the function of official organizing and guiding, to regulate related organizations and personnel management, and to promote the healthy development of outdoor sports; to establish rescue system, and to ensure outdoor sports participants life and property security; to give full play to resources superiority of outdoor sports, to exploit and develop reasonably, to strive to create brand events of outdoor sports, and to promote the sustainable and healthy development of outdoor sports.
