Network management is an important research subject under the development of Internet. The basic function of network management includes exception management, configure management, performance management, security management and flow management. Expansiable network scale, varying network device and isomerous network demand more and more for network management. Presently, network management system is primarily based on four kinds: web model , C/S model, distributed model and multi-agent model. But they are insufficient in the man-machine interface, intelligence and network management. This paper suggests a network management model based on the intelligent agent, which is made up of application of work station, application of intelligent agent, intelligent controller, knowledge base and application of security management. This model improves usage convenience by adjusting parameters of rules library and configuration of knowledge base: by applying topology discovery, rule induct of knowledge base, intelligent controller and MIB object variables to strength network management for exception, performance, configuration , intelligence; by applying security based on the user and access control based on view management to strength security of network management. The key technologies of thismodel include classifying the object variables of MIB, intelligent controller, security management and topology discovery. Comparing with past network management systems, this model improves much in usage convenience, intelligence and security. Design of this model aims at small and medium enterpriser for network management. Finally, this paper analyses availability of the model and puts the deep thoughts about how to develop network management and further suggests orientation of research and work for network management fields in the future.
