In this thesis, we made an overview on the history and the latest achievements of industrial network and compared Industrial Ethernet with Total Distributed Control Systems and Fieldbus Control System, two other popular network control systems. We also introduced the history and the development of Industrial Ethernet and made a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of Industrial Ethernet for industrial control. Then we analyzed the real-time performance of Ethernet and presented several solutions to advance the real-time performance by using the up-to-date technology such as full-duplex switch Ethernet, VLAN, QoS and IPv6. Furthermore, we analysed a few recent industrial Ethernet standards and their solution to real time of Ethernet, such as Ethernet/IP, PROFINET and ETHERNET Powerlink. We also introduced detailedly one of the solutions of Real-Time Ethernet, IEEE 1588, the standard for a precision clock synchronization protocol. Based on this standard, we pointed out distributed motion control networked technology based on Ethernet, and analyzed the application of IEEE 1588 in the synchronization control of distributed motion system, and brought forward a design method of Ethernet adapter for synchronization control based on IEEE 1588.
