An Analysis Of Longli Ancestral Culture In Jinping County

This dissertation studies the ancestral temples of Longli Town in JinpingCounty of Guizhou Province through the perspectives of culture by means of acombination of literature analysis, field work and functional analysis. So far littleresearch concerning Longli’s ancestral temples has been done. The author of thecurrent project goes further for a more profound and newer analysis and study ofLongli’s ancestral temple culture. Meanwhile, suggestions are offered as to theprotection and problems concerned.The current research includes five parts in addition to the preface andconclusion, totaling over30,000words. The preface mainly states the status quo ofresearch on ancestral temples as well as the reasons, significance and methodologyinvolved.Part1gives a simple introduction to Longli Town in terms of history, streetlayout, population, ethnic composition and geographical environment.Part2makes a brief statement of the background and conditions for theemergence of Longli’s ancestral temples as well as a concise presentation of fiveancestral temples available in Longli Town of Jinping County.Part3conducts an analysis of the functions of Longli’s ancestral temples.Part4expounds the culture of Longli’s ancestral temples, involving surnames,ancestral temples’ couplets, architecture and clans.Part5elaborates the value of Longli’s ancient temples and submits some advicefor their protection.The innovations of this dissertation lie in a comprehensive survey of the presentsituation, culture, origin of clans and religious services regarding the ancestraltemples of Longli Town of Jinping County by means of field work, questionnairesand participant observations as well as the advice about the protection of ancestraltemples based on local conditions so as to combine survey corpus with theories,illustrate the crisis of Longli’s ancestral temples as an intangible cultural heritage,and explore the ways of inheriting and protecting the ancestral temple culture.
