Calligraphy and Erhu performance, the most representative essences of art in China, havetheir own laws of art and both of them are rooted in the common cultural origin. Theircommonalities exist in the field of culture ideology and aesthetic awareness. Moreover, as there-creations of art, calligraphy and Erhu performance reflect a certain amount of psychologicalexperience and personality traits in addition to show casing on technical level. Both are tryingto integrate personal feelings into works, and carry out the secondary expression by thehandling of professional skills to arouse the viewer’s sympathy, so that creators, viewers andworks integrated to form a common emotional experience.Art psychology, a branch of psychology, is the study of art and mental activity and mentaldiscipline in art appreciation. In the context of the art psychology, the aesthetic thinking ofartistic creation, purpose of the use of artistic skills, psychological structure of the artist’spersonality, are the important basis for the analysis of the work style.This paper analyzes three aspects of commonalities between calligraphy and Erhuperformance in the field of psychology. Firstly, in the aspect of aesthetic, studying on theircommonalities in the geographical sense, the sense of the characters, the spirit, mood, intensity,and the actual situations through the analysis of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism contained incalligraphy and Erhu performance. Secondly, in the aspect of techniques, analyzing theinterlinked nature in techniques through the study of both techniques in terms of their operatingpurposes, principles and effects. Thirdly, in the aspect of personality psychology, studying thepersonality similarities that having an effect on the form of styles in calligraphy and Erhuperformance through the analysis of the psychological factors that influence personality andmental activities of the artistic subjects generated in the process of both of them. The purpose ofthis paper is to clear the commonalities of calligraphy and Erhu performance exist in the relatedfields of art psychology. There are also inspirations and significance in the learning ofcalligraphy and Erhu performance.
