As a famous translator who has a thorough knowledge of both Chinese and western cultures, Fu Lei and his translations have a far-reaching influence in China. Among all his translated works exist a theoretical work which is very special, The philosophy of art written by H. Taine. That’s why the thesis has chosen this book as the object of study. By comparing the different translations of Fu Lei and contrasting the version of Fu Lei with other translators, the thesis aims to analyze the thought, the style and the skills of translation of Fu Lei, which have a great academic value. In addition, the thesis interprets Fu Lei’s "artistic view of translation" and discusses the concept of "cultural intertextuality". By combining the theory and the practice, the thesis contains both the analyses of the text and the discussion of theories. It can be seen as an attempt of research to explore the interaction between the theory and the practice of translation. The thesis divides into six parts. In the introduction, we present the significance of the topic and the research methods. The first chapter introduces the history between Fu Lei and The philosophy of art and gives a brief overview of the translation and research situation of this work in China. The second chapter compares the different translations of Fu Lei. By giving some examples, we analyze Fu Lei’s translation strategies from the perspective of intertextuality:to transform the intertextuality, to avoid the intertextuality, and to remind the intertextuality. In this way, we achieve to uncover Fu Lei’psychological motivation in the course of translation and retranslation. We discuss also a new concept "cultural intertextuality" and its relationship with the possibility of translation, as well as the subjectivity showed by Fu Lei in this course. The third chapter compares the version of Fu Lei with those of Shen Qiyu and Zhang Wei. By analyzing a lot of examples, we show Fu Lei’s translation art from the following aspects:choosing the words precise and appropriate, the smooth style, the various nuances, the resemblance of spirit, and the clear logic. The forth chapter interprets Fu Lei’s "artistic view of translation" from the respects of origin and content. The conclusion serves as a brief summary of the thesis and proposes the perspective of the translation research in China.Through these analyses, the thesis shows that the art and the translation constitute two pivots of the life of Fu Lei. On one hand, his artistic culture influences his view of translation and guarantees his success in this field; on the other hand, he considers the translation as a noble art and an eternal pursuit of the life. Fu Lei does have a good taste of art. His translation art deserves our learning and research. He overcomes skillfully the difficulties of translation caused by the language and the culture and promotes the development of cultural intertextuality towards a favorable direction with his translated works. The translation research in China had better integrate the different aspects such as the traditional and the modern, the language and the culture, the theory and the practice, etc. and continue to explore the values of more other translated canons.
