Known as an outstanding translator in modern Chinese history, Fu Lei has spared no efforts in showing the masterpieces of French literature to Chinese readers. He plays a significant role in transferring the culture and promoting the understanding and exchanges between two civilizations. Besides, Fu Lei attached great importance to the practices of translations rather than theories. Centering on his characteristic of spiritual resemblance in translation, our study analyses the translation of the fiction of Balzac named Pierrette from the aspect of text, paratext and extratext in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of Fu Lei.In the first chapter, based on the text of the translation of Pierrette, our analysis displays his characteristic of spiritual resemblance in the text as well as the comparison with that of Gao Mingkai. From the choice, the abundance and the variety of words to the reconstruction of phrases, the translation of Fu Lei seems to conform better to the original version. If we define the Pierrette of Fu Lei as the spiritual resemblance, the version of Gao Mingkai would be the formal resemblance. Moreover, Fu Lei conducted a series transformations regarding to the cultural context, such as the conversion of the units, the proverbs, the religious terms as well as the metaphors. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of his spiritual resemblance from the aspect of paratext and extratext. By quoting the paratexts and the extratexts of Fu Lei, mainly in the prefaces, notes, critiques and letters, we’d like to know more about his characteristic of translation including the origin and the connotation of the spiritual resemblance, the preconditions of the translator, and the realization of spiritual resemblance of Fu Lei. All these documents demonstrate the efforts made by Fu Lei in order to bring out the remarkable translations. We have thereby a relatively overall acquaintance of Fu lei and his characteristic of translation. His spiritual resemblance incarnates not only in the results of translation but also penetrates in his practices, his attitude and his objective of translation. Serving as modal for later translators, Fu Lei promotes largely the transmission of French literature in China. He injects vigor and dynamic in the development of Chinese translation theory.
