The emotion competence is one kind of adaptive emotional response, whichrefers to the individual awareness, understanding oneself and other’s emotion, on thebasis of which to express and regulate properly, in order to help oneself to face thechallenge, to reach their goals and to participate in social interaction effectively.Emotion is an important part of children’s social competence, mainly includingemotion understanding and emotion regulation. One of the main tasks during earlystage of childhood education is to cultivate emotion competence, which is healthy tothe development of children’s emotion. Some researches indicate that thedevelopment of children’s emotion competence can be influenced by many factors,for example, children’s cognitive competence and the family education. Recently, thechildren’s emotion competence and peer relationships become the hotspot at homeand abroad. However, many studies treat the emotion competence as a single-phaseindependent variable to explore the effect of emotion competence in one aspect on thepeer relationships. Few study the influence of peer relationship on the emotioncompetence. This study aims to verify the relationship between peer relations emotioncompetence, consisting emotion understanding and emotion regulation forfive-year-old children. The results of this study can further clarify the relationbetween the children’s peer relationships and emotion competence from another view,which can enrich the theory of children’s social development and provide a new modeto promote the development of children’s peer relationships and cultivate children’semotion competence.This study used the method of peer nomination to measure peer relationship, andmethod of situation observation to investigate the competence of emotionunderstanding and emotion regulation. Then variance analysis was carried out on the peer relationship and to analyze the correlation between peer relationships andemotion competence.The results indicated that:(1) The difference of peer acceptance among five-year-old children is significant,and girls are more popular than boys with companions.(2) Children with different types of peer relationship express significantdifferences in the two-dimensional emotion competence. The difference isunremarkable at the situation recognition and mixed emotion understanding level,same with the aspect of frustration. While the difference is big at the aspect ofadherence and compliance of emotion regulation.(3) There is significant positive correlation between social preference andemotion regulation competence, while the correlation between social impact andemotion regulation competence isn’t obvious. In addition, social preference has thefunction of predicting emotion regulation competence of children.
