The book Liu Zhidan is an biographical novel, written in1962by Li Jiantong, the younger brother’s wife of Liu Zhidan who served as the original leader in the center of Shanbei revolution. However, it was defined as an anti-Party novel at the Tenth Plenary Session of the Eighth Central Committee of China’s Communist Party (CPC) in1962by Mao Zedong, who said,"It’s a new invention by using novels to oppose the Party." Since then, the book had experienced a long time of censorship, during which tens of thousands of people were dragged in. After its redress, it was banned several times. By reading through the novel itself, one cannot pick up something very special. The novel, which integrates the wisdom of Li Jiantong, a artist from the department of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Yan’an, and collective wisdom, was regarded as an "anti-Party novel" only because of its promotion of a revolutionary leader in northwest China. Undoubtedly, this is very strange. But the phenomenon itself contains very complicated historical stories. This thesis is intended to investigate the historical background of the incident by researching on the history, and will adopt today’s view to rethink the history. Also, it will apply the political graphic mode to analyze the cause of the incident. The book Liu Zhidan itself is closely associated with Liu Zhidan himself and the Party struggles. It is the Northwest Party History’s "Sanjiayuan Arm Confiscation Incident","Shanbei Purges","Northwest Board Meeting of Senior Cadres" and other political incidents that pushed Liu Zhidan and the biography novel Liu Zhidan to the center of the Northwest Party History and political struggles. They never got rid of these troubles. Therefore, to fully understand the foundation of the Liu Zhidan incident, you should have a good knowledge of the relevant files of the Northwest Party History. Without the knowledge of the Shanbei history, you would never have an accurate and comprehensive understanding of Liu Zhidan and the contradictions caused by this. However, the Liu Zhidan incident was not indispensable. The contradictions recorded in the Shanbei Party History were not the essential reason that necessarily triggered the incident. In fact, the formation of the incident has a close relationship with the grotesque ties between the politics and the literature and art emerging out after the Yan’an Forum. The production process where politics guides art and literature, or even the process of criticism and criticism acceptance, renders the political graphic mode of art and literature become the mainstream of literary criticism. It was under this ideology that the novel Liu Zhidan was born. It was then defined and dealt with politically by politicians. Finally, to satisfy the ideological struggle, it turned into the biggest literary inquisition after the founding of New China.Compared with previous studies, this thesis features three big major breakthroughs. Firstly, the thesis researches on the contradictions recorded in the Shanbei Party History based on my reading of large amounts of historical files. It also interprets the historical background for the novel’s birth, by discussing the relevant problems of Liu Zhidan recorded in the Shanbei Party History and the content of the novel Liu Zhidan. Secondly, the thesis has a relatively elaborate research on the background of the author Li Jiantong, aiming to uncover the motives of the novel’s birth, and will also explore the influence of Li Jiantong’s thought process on her writing of the novel Liu Zhidan. Thirdly, by placing the cause of the Liu Zhidan incident under the background of the art and literature relations after the founding of New China, or even of the CPC’s ideological struggles, the thesis tries to find out the cause of the incident, and briefly narrates the significance of the Liu Zhidan incident in the history of literature.
