The "Left foot" performance is an assembly of songs, dances, and music of Yi ethnic group’s folk art. It includes elements of Yi culture, manufactures, as well as many aspects of Yi daily life. Having a bright rhythm, and possessing a rich power of expression, it represents an important means of the Yi ethnic group to convey emotions in artistic life, joyful festivals, marriage celebrations, as well as in other occasions. In2008, the "Left foot" performance, for its distinct artistic style and particular region in which it is performed, has been included in the second group of national intangible culture heritage. The present dissertation, in the basic gathering and assortment of documents as well as in the conduction of the fieldwork, applied theories and methods of ethnic musicology, art, culture, anthropology and other subjects. It analyses and explores the value and significance of the "Left foot" performance as expression of intangible culture, as well as investigating its current problems. Finally, it provides suggestions on how to better protect and inherit the "Left foot" dance, so that it may adjust reasonably and healthily to the modernization process.
