Ernest Hemingway(1899-1961),one of the most important authors in thehistory of American literature, won the Nobel Prize for literature in1954.Hemingways novels are acclaimed for the succinct and lucid prose language, thewriting style influence the writers of the United States and even the world. Inaddition, Hemingway is also famous for the portrayal of the male images’characters.Therefore, Hemingway is usually defined as a writer aboutmasculinity.Many commentators believe that male image is the key to theHemingways description, and female image shaping is Hemingways weakness. Theywant to manipulate men,by hook and crook delusion, or they do not have their ownthoughts and characters, are the accessory of male images and lose themselves. Sosome people claim that Hemingway has a certain "female" complex, he is "a manwithout women". That evaluation seems to have a final verdict,but it has attractedreverse thinking, inspired people to revisit the image of characters in Hemingwaysworks.In contrasts with the conventional view, we may discover the fact that thefemale images in Hemingways works are not the described object, but influence themale roles,they are not sloppy categories or tags, but are complex and changeable inpersonalities, they are the vivid images of women,and record the womens life at thattime.This article starts with several representative works of Hemingway,emphatically analyzes the female image,projects on the social environment at thattime, and intends to explain the concept of Hemingways view of women and itsinfluence on his female image shaping. In this paper, I analyze the female charactersin the novels "A Farewell to Arms" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls",try to make a morein-depth and comprehensive understanding of Hemingways writing, and to a certainextent,try to mirror the evolution rule of women thoughts at that time, as well as inthe short stories "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"and"Cat in the Rain".This thesis is divided into six parts.Introduction part briefly describes Hemingways life and works, at the same time reviews the current research status for the Hemingway’s female images at homeand abroad.The first chapter focuses on Hemingways novel "A Farewell to Arms",analyzing Catherine,the typical new female image,concretely.Then it comes to aconclusion that Catherine is mature,brave and independent,her knowing of love andlife influences Henrys behavior and his view of the world.The second chapter takes "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" as anexample, analyzing the image of the controversial Margaret.She is somehowabominable, but also worth sympathy.The third chapter respectively analyzes Mary in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" andthe wife in "Cat in the Rain", discusses Hemingway’s imagine about the harmoniousrelationships between man and woman,and review his understanding of women’sliving condition at that time,concludes that Hemingway can not only tell women’sliving condition on the view of women,but also make a thinking and associationabout this kind of pathological reality,in order to search for the solution to reach theharmonious relationship.The fourth chapter concludes the characteristics of Hemingway’s femaleimages,and probes into the development of feminism,the switched family life andthe setbacks in his love life,in order to tell their impacts on Hemingway’s femaleimage creation.The conclusion part summarizes that Hemingway is not only a famous writerto depict the male image, but also a writer who has a fully understanding aboutwomen in different living environment.He thinks much about women’s livingcondition and the rebuild of gender structure.He is featured with a variety ofdifferent personality types of female image with exquisite technique, vividlyreproduces womens living condition at that time, pays equal attention to descriptionon both male and female images.
