The development of the cursive script started from the end of the Qin Dynasty to the TangDynasty, which lasted for more than four hundred years. During that period of long time, cursivescript underwent two peaks due to Zhang Zhi of the East Han Dynasty and the Wang’s Family ofthe East Jin Dynasty. When it came to the period of Zhang Xu and Huai Su in the Tang Dynasty,it reached an unprecedented glorious time. After the Tang Dynasty, the evolution of Chinesecharacters form almost ended, which led to the asynchronous development in calligraphy andcharacter. Therefore, the calligraphy development patterns, which were different from the past, came into being. One was the rigid legal construction which resulted in the development ofregular script, and the other was the creation of the romantic scene which contributed to theprevalence of cursive script. Two figures appeared in the romantic literature and arts of the TangDynasty, one of which was Li Bai, the famous poet who conveyed his inner feelings by means ofromantic expressions; the other was Huai Su, the notable calligrapher who expressed his spiritualworld through various styles of lines with black and white. There are five parts in this paper. The first part presents the historical background briefly byintroducing two main lines of calligraphy styles in the Tang Dynasty: the rigorous regular scriptand the romantic cursive script. The second part gives a description of Huai Su’s bewildering andlegendary life by using some verses at that time. The third part is the story of Huai Su and ZhangXu, because in the history of Chinese calligraphy, especially that of Tang Dynasty, the duo isaffectionately referred to as "the crazy Zhang and the drunken Su". Although there were no directcontacts between them, it seemed that the two cursive calligraphers could communicate witheach other through Yan Zhenqing, the greatest master calligraphers throughout the Chinesehistory. The fourth part describes Huai Su’s cursive calligraphy, which is the exploration of hisspiritual world. In this part, I first briefed Huai Su’s nature of romanticism, and then analyzed hiscalligraphy creation with quickness at the core. The fourth part elaborates the master work ofHuai Su--Huai Su’s Autobiography by dividing his writing mood into four stages, at whichanalyze his handwriting, structure and composition respectively. The last part lists Huai Su’ssuccessors and illuminates his impact on future generations. This paper was studied and accomplished by using a series of research methods, such asusing references, theoretical approach, comparative analysis, product analysis, etc.
