For common people,self-portraits are the personal images which the artists have drown for themselves. The self-portraits are only the records of the experience of the artists’life or like a mirror that reflects the artists’ psychological process during some period of their life. However, I believe it is not enough to explain self-portraits. It is an ambiguous explaination of self-portraits.Because we only know that it is maybe a truth, but ignore how the fact conveys through concrete characters. To an another word, if we can understand the concrete factors in the self-portraits that we can use the inverse method to know the nature of the artists. For as we known, because of the natural characters of the artists that the self-portraits can show us the special images. Those special images have a connection with the artists’ preferences which is in their blood. For instance, why some artists are in favor of a certain angle(frontage, side face, orthometric drawing,side-looking and so on) of the face or sight line when they draw their self-portraits. Analysing the relation between the factors of the self-portraits and the natural characters of the artists will be one way to learn the deep meanings of the preferences in the self-portraits which are like mysterious mirrors. Here are a total of12artists’self-portraits to explain my point of view, these artists, namely:Leonardo da Vinci,Albrecht Durer,Rembrandt,Peter Paul Rubens,Van Dyck,Vincent van Gogh,Giorgio de Chirico,Pablo Picasso,Paula Modersohn-Becker,Salvador Dali,Francis Bacon,Frida Kahlo.
