Yan Geling, one of the famous overseas Chinese authors, enjoys a great reputation in thecontemporary literary world at home and abroad. With the additional use of modern media suchas drawing, dancing, film and television, her novels show the strong points of various arts media.Exactly on this basis, this paper interprets Yan’s novel in a thorough way from the view of“trans-medium”. It discusses the unique narrative features on the basis of the comparison ofnarrating skills and other arts medium, and digs into the literary functions and aestheticsignificance of those narrating skills.In the introduction part, the paper firstly defines the Media and the Cross-medium Narration;then introduces the creation of Yan Geling and the research status towards her creation. Besides,it analyzes the reasonability and novelty of interpreting Yan’s novel through cross-media viewboth from the external and internal causes. According to the relation between the novel and othermedia during the formation and development of Yan’s creation, the paper is divided into threeparts, i.e. thinking of drawing, thinking of dancing and thinking of film and television. The firstpart mainly analyzes the use of drawing art in Yan’s novel language, which forming a “drawingscenes according to feelings” thinking. The ideographic function of the color and light indrawing art, her novel tries to “drawing scenes according to feelings”, externalizing the innerfeelings and emotions into concrete visual elements, creating a sense of pictures among the linesof the novel. Besides, Yan gains an inspiration from the designing techniques of drawing, andestablishes an effect of “frame-style drawing”, which not only gathering the horizon, but alsocreating a sense of “peeping”. In the second part, the paper analyzes the thinking of dancingreflected from the image-shaping. The dancing art takes the body language seriously and focuseson showing the sense of presence and Yan uses this point into shaping the character, reflectingthe unique personality and life under her pen. The movement and expression of the dancing,together with the fictional narration, makes a harmonious combination in the novel. In the thirdpart, the paper analyzes the innovation of Yan’s narrating structure and rhythm by using thethinking of film and television and the montage method, and the semantic value caused by thecomposition of pictures. Relying on the sharpness of her being the scripwriter for many movies,Yan uses the montage for reference and break through the straight narrating time, which not onlyforming the space structure but also changing the original narrating rhythm. The composition ofpictures realizes the effect of meaning increasing and enriches the literary narration methods andart connotation.Among the background of diversification, novel has found its common ground with thedifferent art fields such as drawing, dancing, film and television. Yan creatively combined her novels with various non-fictional art methods,searching the humanity and the self infindingwriting method.For opening up a new way to research Yan’s opus,this paper draws a new pointof view called”Cross-Medium” to dig out deep artistry of her novels.
