The novel White Deer Plain, is a national secret history as well as a peak in the history of the development of contemporary Chinese cultural. Published in1993, it has received lots of attention from people of all walks. Mainly focusing on cultural research, social history, women’s studies and comparative literature, artistic performance, scholars have carried out thorough research. After winning the Mao Dun Literary Prize in1998, it set foot on across-media spreading, such as Qinqiang, clay sculpture, comic books, dramas, ballets and movies. Despite differing in time span, view selection and narrative devices, their common success is the full demonstration of Guanzhong rich regional characteristics and splendid rural epic by creating typical Guanzhong cultural symbols. The creation of cultural lies in the creation of symbol. Since the basic function of cultural is representation, the author chooses utensil, system and spirit as Guanzhong cultural symbols to study. From the perspective of cultural semiotics, with the approaches of text analysis and cross-media transmission, the paper aims to figure out across-media spreading process of White Deer Plain, and interpret meanings of Guanzhong cultural symbols in different medium versions. By that means, it further explores how to succeed in shaping regional cultural symbols in literary works and how to make regional cultural widely spread and deeply identified. The first chapter is introduction, elaborately presenting the basis, significance, research methods and innovation points of the paper.Based on combing the evolving process of across-media propagation of White Deer Plain, Chapter llanalyzes the innovation as well as shortcomings of each text like novel, Qinqiang, clay sculpture, comic books, dramas, ballets and movies. White Deer Plain, as a novel, it is a well-deserved national secret history. As Qinqiang(locals roar local drama), it is the most favored way by Guanzhong locals. The form of clay sculpture is a visual feast, while comic strip is the combination of visual cultural and literature. Drama is the most faithful to the original work and stage play is very challenging. Movie White Deer Plain, which takes on an elaborate demonstration of the northwest regional cultural, does not do very well at the box office. At the end of this chapter, based on the analysis of different adapted versions, the author summarizes laws of across-media propagation. The third chapter expounds Guanzhong cultural symbol at utensil level——land, ancestral hall, memorial arch, stage by studying their artistic expression and cultural connotations in different versions. Chapter IVelaborates the cultural symbol from systematic level——different pattern of manifestation of Xiangyue. Ideological symbols such as the white deer, old Qinqiang, Tian Xiaoe play a key role in Guanzhong cultural study. In Chapter V,the author carries out a comparative research on different emphasis points in various audio-visual text. The last part draws a conclusion on how different Guanzhong cultural symbols express regional features, and compose epic. What is more, as for how to realize cultural transmission through shaping regional cultural symbols in literature works in order to gain wider recognition, the author raises an exploratory study on that.
