As a comprehensive art, animation has formed a unique artistic charm during the river of centennial development, and provided people with a lot of spiritual enjoyment. From personal expression to public recreation, from children to adult audience groups, and from scientific research to commercial advertising, the form and content expressed by animation is too rich to be categorized.With the improvement of animation technology, coupled with popularization and the rapid propagation of emerging media, New media especially the increasing popularity of broadband network, the current animation has gone deep into everyone’s life. In addition to cartoons, advertising, film and TV titles, film visual effects, games, would require the use of animation techniques. The application of three-dimensional animation technology has introduced the appreciation habit of the audience and the whole concept of animation to a new field, and also brought a broader space to the development of animation’s modeling design.Chinese animation has also been left a brilliant page in the history of the world.Adhering to the path of developing national animation, the older generation of animation artists have always paid attention to the application of traditional Chinese cultural elements to the art of animation character sculpture, and created lots of masterpieces known in land and overseas, earning the reputation of" Chinese school ". However, with the promulgation of the China’s "opening and introduction" policy, the door of animation market has opened widely, and welcomed many classic roles of foreign cartoons, which is not only an opportunity but also a challenge to the new generation of Chinese animation. Faced with this serious situation, the new generation of animators have been studied the creative experience from other countries blindly, and some even copied the character image of foreign "movie stars". Therefore, the phenomenon of imitation and plagiarism in different degrees has appeared in the Chinese animation character modeling, leading to the sharp decrease of animation audience rate and resulting in the landslide of Chinese animation industry.How does Chinese animation reproduce the glory of "Chinese School"? This is a very realistic problem, and has been placed in front of us. To the animators in new era, it is also a problem which calls for positive thinking and needs to be solved urgently.Chinese animation should be based on the absorption of nutrients national culture, and then draw means of expression abroad, let the world art into China’s national culture, the dissemination of national culture closely together with the development of China’s animation, the only way China Animation Art Lin’s return to the world of animation will be able to achieve the target.The Sui and Tang dynasties is one of the most prosperous periods in Chinese history, from which many influential works have been created, including literature and film, as well as games. The type of the characters in Sui and Tang dynasties is very rich, and each character is interpreted fully with vivid details. Whether the bold and forthright hero with a little wildness or the forethoughtful counselor is quite characteristic and has been recognized by the following generations. Constructed together by them, the important literary figures in the later works with the theme of Sui and Tang dynasties have penetrated into people’s life and earned their love and worship.This paper focuses on the discussion of how to apply the Chinese elements to Chinese animation character modeling, and takes the creation of three-dimensional visual image of major historical figures in the Sui and Tang dynasties for example, to explore the ways and approaches by which to adopt the traditional cultural elements with "Chinese spirit" in the animation character design.
