The Confucius Temple, also known as the Temples of Literature, Confucius Temple, Xue Gong (academy), is an institution and place where ancient Chinese people expressed their worship to Confucius and spread Confucianism. It has been more than two thousand years since the first Confucius temple established in478BC. As the physical entity of Confucianism, the Confucius temple along with the rising status of Confucianism gradually expands in scale and number.It finally becomes a unique cultural presence in China’s feudal society.The Confucius Temple not only shows the attitude of the ruling class towards Confucianism, but also reflects the political, economic, cultural, educational, and other information of various historical periods.Located in the hinterland of the Central Plains, Henan Province occupies an important position in pre-modern Chinese history, affecting the course of historical development. Therefore, the study of the Confucian Temples in Henan Province has a unique meaning.Through a survey of the Confucius Temples in the23counties of the eight cities in Henan Province,this paper aims to identify the construction time of the original temple, level of the remains and promulgation date, gather maintenance records and learn about present utilization.Based on the result,the paper tries to further discuss the problems of the development of Confucius Temples in Henan Province, and give some suggestions concerning future development and utilization. For those who want to know the newest situation of Confucius Temple remains in Henan Province and how to use of the Confucius Temple better in today’s circumstance, this paper is of certain referential significance.
