Reconstruct The Totality Of History

In History and Class Consciousness, Lukacs analyzed the modern problem from the perspective of rationalization in our society, and he found there is a universal trend of mechanization and commercialization. He call it "reification". In reification, time is transformed into abstract physical space, which is the environment of the scientifically and mechanically fragmented and specialized production of the object of labor. This process makes human’s activity becomes less and less active and more and more contemplative. The contemplative stance must likewise transform the basic categories of man’s immediate attitude to the world:it reduces space and time to a common denominator and degrades time to the dimension. Furthermore, it makes people just aware the surface of reification, which strengthened the reification in turn. So this article focuses on this issue and analyses Lukacs’s study on the question:how the space-like time be universalization and inforced reification of our society. Then, it will elaborate Lukacs’s research about the ideological roots of reification. At last,we will discuss how can Lukacs achieve de-reification of time and enter into a generated history,and then recover the totality of our society.
