In this thesis, I try to explore the principles and methods in the creativeprocess of the world-wide popular musicals, including the bookadaption, lyric writing and the play producing, in order to find properapproaches for Chinese original musical producing. It is easy to figure outthat the books of those well-known musicals are always adapted byclassical literature, popular novels, plays and films. However, the musicalis such a unique, fantastic and modern art form that can entertain theaudience not only the visual side, but also the auditory side. Hardly canthis kind of enjoyment be obtained by novels and other theatrical genres, and only musicals can take that seat. The thesis focus on analyzing theessence of musical theatre and the intertextuality reflected form the bookadaption and the audience reception. There are six parts of the paper. The first chapter, second chapter, thirdchapter and the fourth chapter answer the following questionsrespectively: what genre does musical belong to? Why does musical haveintertextuality? How does the intertextuality of the musical make? Howdo the popular musical inspire the musical bussiness in China? I try toanalyze the four questions logically in order to finish the thesis.
