Lu Zhishen is a famous hero who comes from the fiction <Outlaws of Marsh>.The writer has shaped a successful character of Lu Zhishen, so that both readers andscholars like him very much. Lu Zhishen has a clear personality, he loves what heloves and hates what he hates, and he always helps those who are in troubles. He isgenerous, rude and wise. The successful character shaping of Lu Zhishen is owned tothe writer’s excellent skill in writing, which works from different angles, such as thedescription of the character’s appearance, language and actions. Also, the writer hasused many kind of rhetoric skills, like figurative, exaggerate and contrastive, whichmake us both love and respect the fat monk at last. So we think it is having evaluationto study how the writer shapes the character of Lu Zhishen.The paper is made up with five chapters; the first one introduces the edition ofOutlaws of Marsh, the importance of character to the art of novels, the researchsituation of Lu Zhishen and research significance and methods; the second oneanalysis the important position of Lu Zhishen in the novel, taking the angle from hislife situation, his end and the evaluations on him which come from scholars; the thirdone begins to study how does the writer shape the character of Lu Zhishen, it includeshis appearance, language and actions; the fourth one has made many contrast betweenLu Zhishen and other heroes, such as Wu Song, Li Kui, Lin Chong, Yang Zhi andSong Jing. At the same time, the paper has made a contrast between Lu Zhishen andhimself. The last one elaborates Lu Zhishen’s art image, he is not just an ordinaryperson but also a hero to others and in a higher length, he is Buddha.
