A Study On The Vocabulary Of Hohhot Dialect In Chinese

Chinese Hohhot dialect belongs to the Jin dialect. Compared with mandarinvocabulary, Hohhot dialect has many ancient words, four-word phrases and loan-words from the minority languages. This is one big characteristic of the Hohhotdialect vocabulary system. The purpose of this article is to supply and enrich theresearch about Chinese Hohhot dialect vocabulary, to know the differences betweendialect and mandarin words, to explore folk culture, and to use the laws andcharacteristics of the dialect vocabulary. This article bases on Chinese Hohhot dialectvocabulary as the research object. First of all, emphatically describes the formationprocess of Hohhot dialect. And reveals its cause of the formation from these aspects:population migration, language contact, geographical characteristics, social environ-ment and historical administrative. Second, according to the attribute of the ancientwords into Hohhot dialect, this paper divides its three kinds: personal description,behavioral description and folk description. Combining ancient books and regionalsociety, history, culture and other aspects, analyses the origin, meaning, word part andcolor, and folk culture of the ancient words. By researching the usage of the ancientwords in Hohhot dialect to compare with outer zone dialect and mandarin, discoversthe diachronic, morphological and semantic characteristics. Third, according toanalyses the word-form and semantic structure of four-word phrases in Hohhotdialect and to illustrates, this article gets four-word phrases to have two basiccharacteristics that is to contain archaism elements and to correspond with mandarinidioms. In the aspect of pragmatics four-word phrases have the character of region,feelings, vividness, concreteness, identity and specificity. Last, there are a lot ofloanwords from the minority languages into Hohhot dialect, whose formation is dueto the vocabulary vacancy, language contact and prestige. In this paper, loanword isclassified from three aspects, and thinks that the changes of lexical meanings ofloanword mainly have reservation, expansion, narrowing and shift.
