The Three-word form and Four-word form are two distinctive language structure types in modern Chinese. They have stably external forms and close interior forms with certain whole and concretionary meaning. Generally speaking, it includes with word and fixed phrase. In the modern Chinese Dictionary there is a larger number of existence, and a centralized collection.As an very important dictionary noting Modern Mandarin Chinese mainly and improving Chinese standardization, the Dictionary of Modern Chinese (the fifth edition) collects a variety of commonly used language units in modern Chinese, for example, character, word, phrase, idiom and so on. Basically it reflects the current situation of modern Chinese vocabulary. And more important is that it’s the first time to mark the word clearly in the history of Chinese dictionary. Based on this, I come to a conclusion that the Three-word form and Four-word form are the general boundary between word and phrase.The material resources and statistical objects of this thesis are the Three-word forms and Four-word forms from The Dictionaiy of Modern Chinese (the fifth edition). Using the methods of comprehensive statistics and comparative analysis, I statistic and analyze the basic features of the Three-word forms and Four-word fonns in detail, text the traditional view on the basis of words and phrases specific data, and finally probe into the general boundary between word and phrase in Modern Chinese system.
