Research On Urban Elements In Modern Detective Novels

Detective story is an important part of Western popular literature,which had a history of over 100 years. In Late Qing and Early Republican China,at the trend of“the West Breeze East Gradually”,persons of insight initiated "novel field revolution.” The enlightening trend of thought attracted Chinese intellectuals’ attention,because Detective story contains the values of science,democracy,freedom,human rights. The rapid development of the media, printing and publishing industry provides an excellent creative soil for transplantation of detective story. As an exotic,modern detective story experienced a process of translation to local copy and creation. modern detective story had a lot of typical characteristics of modern novel transition,which made it full of research value.The birth of western detective story has inseparable relation with the rise of modern cities. The appearance of the city broke the self-sufficiency and closed structure of farming civilization.The city is open,which gathered unfamiliar faces from different places. Constant flow of people,are busy all day, gradually brought chaos and insecurity. Behind the dazzling neon,there are evil Shadow. The Crimes in detective novels are precisely on this stage. Detective,the main character of the novels,wandering in the city,capturing the fleeting message,is very familiar with every detail of this city. Meanwhile,the modern urban artifacts and some advanced technology,are used to commit crimes or investigation,which makes the detective novels are filled with symbols of modern urban elements.Modern Chinese detective story was also born in the bustling metropolis Shanghai. These points in the creation of the modern detective story are covered,and with a strong Localization. This paper will take the urban element as a starting point.By reading a lot of the modern detective novels,writer data,historical data,then grasp the historical background to the novel as the core text,symbols and significance of study in which urban culture,try to make some innovative interpretation on the local detective story.The paper is divided into three chapters,the first chapter is“Overview of the modern detective story". Mainly explained the historical background,backtrackingwestern industrial revolution and urbanization history,urban order and chaos spawned two sides of detective story. Then describes the relationship between Shanghai’s urbanization,judicial system and the introduction of modern detective story. Finally,combines the modern detective fiction translations from outside to the creation of local circumstances.Chapter two is " the detective in modern detective story ",which mainly on the relationship between the detective and the city. By backtracking detective origin“the City Flaneur",we analyzes the three representative "detective" image,Shanghai nosy,a detective who is similar to“Flaneur”,Lu ping,a "City Ranger" with rebellious spirit and curiosity eyes,and Huo sang,a detective nurtured by urban civilization,but had a paradoxical toward it.Chapter three, " the urban space in modern detective story ",we study the text from the narrow grand public spaces to the private spaces.
