Jiangnan Immigrants And The Construction Of Shanghai Urban Esthetic Culture In Modern Times

After the opening of Shanghai port, it attracted a large number of domestic and foreign immigrants to enter, because of its advantageous geographic environment and open business environment. The immigrants not only brought their hometown culture, but also absorbed other culture in Shanghai, while they exerted their creativity to make Shanghai develop its own unique urban culture. The communication and introduction of western civilization helped Shanghai develop into an international metropolis. However, the name of"Shili Yangchang"and"oriental Paris"made many people believe the culture of Shanghai was full of foreign elements, and completely westernization. By the development of Shanghai urban culture, we can realized that Jiangnan immigrants, as the majority of all, were obviously the communicators of Jiangnan traditional culture, and make a great contribution to the urban spirit of Shanghai, the life attitude, consume perception and aesthetic sentiment of local citizens, also the formation of Shanghai-style culture.This thesis combined Jiangnan immigrants and Shanghai urban esthetic culture together, and discovered the historical source of Shanghai people and the change of social outlook by analyzing the cause and geographic composition of Jiangnan immigrants. It discussed the impact of Jiangnan immigrant culture on Shanghai urban spirit and esthetic fashion from the spiritual level, contrasted Jiangnan traditional esthetic culture and the citizen culture developed from the Jiangnan immigrants in Shanghai to search the inner connection and effect between them, and proved the literary person and scholar of Jiangnan to be the main source of Shanghai-style culture on three aspects of their detailed literature and art activities such as Shanghai-style literature, Shanghai-style painter and opera. Thus we can get a conclusion that Jiangnan immigrants were the communicators and successors of Shanghai traditional urban cultural resource, meanwhile the spirit of immigrants was the main force to promote the prosperity of Shanghai urban culture.Based on a new perspective, this paper tried to find out the Jiangnan elements of Shanghai urban culture by studying the Jiangnan immigrants in Shanghai, and unfold the connection between Shanghai regional culture and Jiangnan traditional culture. It would have a positive significance to grasp the traditional culture resource of Shanghai.
