Joseph Brodsky, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, was a Russian and American essayist and poet with Jewish status. He was born in Leningrad in 1940 and had a short life of 57 years. Brodsky began writing his own poetry immediately after only 8 years education. In his early life in the Soviet Union, he had issues with the authorities, and suffered from poverty and health problems. With all the difficulties he faced, he was still accomplished as a prominent poet. As a result of his remarkable success, Brodsky was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize in Literature.This paper will focus on the changes of the poem by Brodsky through time. The poem will be discussed in Realism, Modernism and Postmodernism. In the introduction part, the life and background of Brodsky will be discussed. After that, in the first chapter, the paper will give a general analysis of the literary characteristics. Original Russian poem writing and the reference to foreign poems will also be included in this part. From Chapter 2 to Chapter 4, the multidimensional characteristics of Brodsky poem will be discussed in Realism, Modernism and Postmodernism.
