Translation Of Novels In Speech Act Theory

The present thesis for MTI degree is composed of two parts.Part One is the translation of three chapters of a New York Times best-seller named Beach House Memories, which is written by Mary Alice Monroe and first published by Gallery Books in May,2012. It is an emotional tale of a strong woman torn between duty and desire, between tradition and change. It is an empowering journey through the seasons of self-discovery.Part Two is a review of the translation presented in the first part of this thesis, which discusses the challenges confronted during the translation of dialogues via a pragmatic point of view, with Speech-Act Theory as its theoretical foundation. Speech-Act Theory is a study of how to do things with words, while dialogue or utterance contains plenty of words that imply various meanings other than the semantic one of the utterer in different contexts. Situational Context and Cultural Context have been brought into discussion in this thesis in order to provide a better view of how to deal with illocutionary acts under different circumstances.
