Since Satre’s scripts had been introduced to China, the acceptance of his plays in China can been divided into several historical periods with different features.This thesis discusses the acceptance of Satre’s plays in two sides:the introduction/translation of his works and stage performance. And based on this point, also discusses the changing processes of the understanding of Satre’s works. Early 1940 s,firstly the works of Satre translated into Chinese were used for propaganda considering the war background. During the period of Seventeen ears(1949-1966),the attitude toward Satre turned to indifferent,hot, then indifferent again, because of the changeable political situation. It is obviously that the whole procedures which Satre’s plays had already gone through are related to the cultural context at that time. While theatre is different with other art forms, such as novels and essays. Stage performance can make theatre alive. Since 1981,Satre’s plays had been staged several times.Various directors interpreted Satre’s scripts differently for different background so that they expressed unique vitality of the scripts and made sure that performers and audience had exclusive experience.
