The US TV series “Fargo” is adapted from the movie “Fargo” directed by the Coen Brothers. The TV series establishes a reprensentative case study for analyzing screenplay adaption and recomposition. “Fargo” designs a distinct narrative structure, the “double-layered structure”, to interpret its allegorical themes. Its integral narrative structure inherits and sublimates the traditional narrative structure inherits and sublimates the traditional narrative theme of the Coen Brothers, as well as the format and elements of the “Film Noir”. Each of the ten episodes yet exquisitely corresponds to an ancient parable, constituting partially independent structures in opposition to the integral structure. This paper will review the distinct structure of “Fargo”, which aims at constructing less constrained apologue characters. This paper will also examine the “defamiliarization” technique utilized for recomposing the characters, as well as the characters’ delicately allegorizing language. The pros and cons of the unique narrative structure of “Fargo” will be analyzed in order to provide an inspiring concept for contemporary screenplay adaption and recomposition.
