As a traditional type of drama of Ningyang County, Shandong Province, the Harp has a history of more than 150 years. With the outstanding singing of “nine tunes, eighteen keys,seventy alas cough” and a skillful use of “coloratura” and “modified tone”, it becomes a folk drama with distinctive local characteristics. From 1918 to 1965, the Harp developed to its third and fourth generation and its troupe had more than one hundred people, with Zheng Rude, Zheng Rujing, Zheng Ruming, Zheng Rubin and Zheng Rujin as its leading actors. Through the efforts of the descendants of the third and fourth generation, Ningyang Harp developed to its prosperous periods and had flourished for more than fifty years. A unique singing style and musical features have formed during the development process of the Ningyang Harp.This paper selects the Harp, a folk drama as the study object and explores its history,musical form and repertory. The current collected text information, image data, musical plays and score data about the Harp are sorted and analyzed in this paper. It also discusses the problems and improvement measures of the Harp through the on-the-spot investigations and study of cultural sectors, cultural venues, performing arts groups and interviews and exchanges with numerous drama artists, Harp actors and relevant respondents. The paper sums up the musical features of the Harp in a microcosmic perspective and tries to contribute to the development of the Ningyang Harp.The full text consists of five parts, as follows:The Preface makes a brief introduction to the Harp as a folk drama. The theoretical and practical significances of the topic are elaborated. An overview is conducted on the current collected text information, scores, biographies, journals and articles about the Harp.The first chapter discusses the historical changes of Ningyang Harp and traces its historical context. Through the context of the formation and development of Ningyang Harp, the musical features of the Harp at various historical stages are explored and the development process of the Harp is sorted.The second chapter discusses the musical characteristics of the Harp. It fully analyzes the Harp from its tune, type of meter, singing, repertory and accompaniment band.The third chapter makes investigations and further cultural analysis on the ecological status of the Harp in Ningyang County from three levels, i.e., the inheritors, inheritance repertory and inheritance troupe. It explores the inheritance status quo of the Harp, thus providing references for its protection.Chapter Four analyzes the social value and multiple protection of the Harp. The Harp couldbe better inherited only by understanding its social value. The harp should be changed and innovated and as an intangible cultural heritage, it should be protected in an all-round and diversified way.The Conclusion states the practical significance of exploring the Harp in the current historical and cultural background.This paper presents the value and significance of the Harp in the current aesthetic culture by analyzing the reality of the Harp’s existence in local communities. It comes to the conclusion that the Harp still exists in our lives and the good use of it is also a protection for it.
