The2012International Biennale of Murals held in Datong, Shanxi Province, showedthe current situation about how China’s modern mural art had developed in recent years.We can clearly see that this exhibition gained unprecedented development for its exhibitionform and content. An atmosphere of innovation could be intensely felt in this exhibitionwith the emergence of a large number of creative works in the aspect of material technology,mural design idea of making etc.. The abundant themes, diversified artistic forms andvarious materials demonstrated in this exhibition had clearly showed that China’s modernmural art had been moving toward a more diversified and artistic direction.Taking thesecharacteristics as the breakthrough points and based on the investigation and research, thisarticle has done a comprehensive analysis and argumentation of these works in order topresent, in a theoretical basis, a overall picture of the2012International Biennale ofMurals.This article is divided into four parts:The Introduction Part generally presents four prominent characteristics anddifferences of the2012International Biennale of Murals compared with formerexhibitions.The first part is International Perspective.This part gives a comparison of ancientmurals and modern mural in the aspect of their themes and function,demonstrating themodern and diversified characteristics of modern murals. Besides, it also introducescharacteristics of foreign murals and the fresh perspective they brings. This exhibition alsoleft a very deep impression on the audience for its artistic form. The techniques andmaterials used in this exhibition not only draw essences from traditions but also exploitsnew materials and techniques developed through modern scientific technology. Even thedigital technology was applied in mural making.From this mural exhibition, we can see evolutionary changes of concepts modernmural art has been going through, including time background, architecture environmentwhich mural creation relies on and their spatial carrier.Based on the analysis of themigration and choice of social environment as well as the diversified development ofcreation carriers, part of works in this exhibition are no longer confined to the interior butmoving outward. These pieces, small or giant, are of various themes and materials,demonstrating a grand growing space of murals. Modern murals nowadays have been more diversified than ever before. In this paper, you will see different kinds of mural carriers, notonly traditional ones like walls and roofs but also modern ones like hyperspace.The third part focuses on the the retaining of common features and the bold display ofpersonality, showing attention people paid to murals in modern times. It also presents thefreedom, diversification and humanity of modern mural art from the personal and publicpoints.This part is divided into three sections. The first section is a common developmentunder the era background, in which murals, not only inheriting themes of traditional muralsbut also drawing spirits and modern life experience of the present society, are seeing moreabundant themes. The second section is unique features complementing common feature.Unlike those contemporary murals that demonstrate macro society themes, this exhibitiontakes the emotion of specific groups, ethnic flavor of minorities as its theme. The thirdsession is the humanity focus. These works beautify our living space, evoke our aestheticemotion and create an artistic atmosphere for this harmonious society.
