A Comparative Study Of Beethoven And Schubert 's Artistic Song "Adelaide"

Art song is one of the important musical generes which was prewailing in the Romantic period,that is a gem in the musical history all over the world, Beethoven and Schubert,as the founders of German and austrian art songs,had made tremendous contributions to the art form of chamber music which combines poetry with music,In their art songs creation, Beethoven inherited and broke-through the style of the classicism composers, Schubert showed the romanticism style and raised the function and status of piano accompaniment to a new historical level.they has their own originality and achievements,which furthermore promoted the development of the art of vocal singing in the 19 th century.According to Matthisson’s poetry “Adelaide”, Beethoven and Schubert created out of two different art songs,this paper has conducted more comprehensive analysis research on the two songs,it compares six respects:the content of poetry,the creation background,musical structure,mode and tonality,harmony and piano as accompany part.from which we learn that Beethoven emphasised on vocal music rather than pianistic music,in most cases, pianistic music was used for accmpaniment.sometimes it was to create poetic atmosphere,however, Schubert raised the status of piano accompaniment to a new level and integrated poetry and music,vocal and piano as an organic whole,this art song is beautiful and moving vocal and insrtrumental duet.in the respect of singing,it made me think about how to sing art songs better through the comparison on artistic characteristics of the two works, combining with author’s performance experience and expounding on the essential requirements of singing the songs,the artistic culture and the singing skills.we can realize and grasp the style of the two songs in order to give a better performance of these songs and provide some theoretical support for singing art songs.
