Liang Yan is a famous calligraphist, calligrphic theorist and educator of calligraphy under Emperor Qianlong’s reign, during which the trend of calligraphy was in the transition from "study of calligraphy book history" to "Epigraphy". Largely based on his paper works during his stay at Shouzhou, this article focuses on studying how Liang Yan acquired calligraphic skills under aforementioned circumstances.The first chapter mainly verifies Liang Yan’s life story in order to build a solid foundation for researches on his works of different stages. Introduction and dating of his works will be covered in the second chapter. Being the most critical part of the paper, the third chapter generates comparisons among Liang Yan’s works during different periods of time according to his book "Chengjinzhai jiwenlu". Meanwhile, it concentrates on sorting out the process of his acquisition of calligraphy based on the timeline of his works. The summary and major findings will be discussed in the last part of this paper. In addition, this paper provides analysis for works from the research that are open for authentification.
