Pan Jiezi, known as "the painter of Dunhuang", is a famous Chinese painter who paints with exact delineation and enriched colors. In 1945, Pan Jiezi went to copy Dunhuang murals and formed indissoluble bound with Dunhuang art henceforth. This essay takes Pan Jiezi and Dunhuang art as the study objects, and expounds his contributions to the area of Dunhuangnology and Dunhuang art.Chapter one focuses on Story of Dunhuang and Art of Mogao Caves at Dunhuang by Pan Jiez, discusses his contributions to the popularization of Dunhuangnology by comparing his books with similar works and raises the opinion that Pan Jiezi has surpassed any other contemporaneous scholar when it comes to the achievement in the area of the popularization of Dunhuangnology.Chapter two discusses contributions of Pan Jiezi’s research on Dunhuang costumes on the studies of ancient costumes by comparing Pan Jiezi with Shen Congwen. Pan Jiezi organized and copied the character costumes in Dunhuang murals intentionally and strategically in his research on costumes materials in Dunhuang murals, which had an important influence on the study of Dunhuang and ancient costumes.Chapter three indicates that Pan Jiezi played an important role in dissemination of Dunhuang art by systematic sorting of the works of copying Dunhuang murals, taking charge of exhibition on Dunhuang art, writing the play Nine Colored Deer and comparison between Pan Jiezi and other contemporaneous scholars.Chapter four mainly discusses the influence of Dunhuang art on Pan Jiezi’s artistic conception and career. Copying Dunhuang murals promoted his thoughts on painting theory, which became one of the primary ideological origins of his putting forward revival of the theory of paintings with exact delineation and enriched colors and made contributions to the development of theory of Chinese painting. Copying Dunhuang murals also promoted his creation of paintings, among which, the paintings in series Creators of Grotto Art and Dunhaung achieved high artistic standards, and became the representatives of modern Chinese paintings.
