A lot of researchers have studied the two books of Shuowen Jiezi writtened by XuShen in Eastern Han Dynasty. But the first to undertake the study of Shuowen Jiezi isLi Yangbing in Tang Dynasty. Then, Xu Xuan called “big Xu” in the early SongDynasty and his brother Xu Kai called “small Xu” in Southern Tang both have a deepresearch on the book of Shuowen Jiezi respectively. Then,in the Qing Dynasty, theChinese Philology has a great leap in the research methods. Some outstanding talentssuch as Duan Yucai, Wang Niansun and his son—Wang Yinzhi as the representativesof the school emerged in QianLong and JiaQing Dynasty. At the same time, DuanYucai, Gui Fu, Zhu JunSheng and WangYun were the most famous talents in the fieldof ShuoWen. Therefore, the researches on Shuowen Jiezi emerged a splendid sight,Among them, Duan Yucai and Guifu were the two representatives. Previous scholarssuch as Zhang Taiyan, Huang Kan, and later Lu Zongda, Zhou Zumo, Wang Li and soon, deeply studied the traditional linguistic thought of Shuowen Jiezi Zhu andShuowen Jiezi Yizheng, especially to the book of Shuowen Jiezi Zhu. But theresearchers to make a comparative study between Duan and Gui from the perspectiveof lexicography are relatively scarce, so it has potential for us to study further. In orderto narrow the scope of the study, we only investigate the content as follows: theoriginal meaning, extended meaning and the distributions of extended meaning inorder to deepen the theory of lexicography and provide reference proposal ondiachronic dictionary compilation. The article consists of five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction part, mainly including the background, object, content, value, research materials and methods. We define that the object of study isthe methods of describing senses of words, which attaches importance to a wordinstead of a Chinese character as one unit in the traditional linguistics. The maincontent of the research on Shuo Wen is classified into three parts from the perspectiveof lexicography. We mainly do research on the comparison of methods of describingsenses of words between Duanzhu (short for the note of Shuowen Jiezi) and Yizheng(short for Shuowen Jiezi Yizheng) including the primary meaning, the extended meaning and the distribution of the extended meanings. Each part consists of theresearch method, comparison and lexicographical value. The lexicological value of thethesis is the important foothold. The second chapter involves the contrastive study of the methods of describingprimary meaning between DuanZhu and YiZheng based on the perspective oflexicography. We study the lexical meaning with the methods of sound, characterfigure, context, notes and different dictionaries, mainly focusing on the characteristicsof each method, then compare the similarities and differences. We put forward thelexicographical value from the perspectives of sense matched with examples anddivision of senses. From the former, we illustrate the ten functions of examples, andfrom the latter, we study the proper quantity of examples matched with the each senseand the quality of each sense, namely how to distract these elements of a sense from allkinds of examples. The third chapter involves the contrastive study of the methods of discribingextended meaning between DuanZhu and YiZheng, which is mainly from three aspectsas follows: the cognitive semantic extension rules, semantic system within the samesemantic field of infection, mutual proof between examples and sense based on theperspective of lexicography. In this part of the thesis, we try to jump out of the inherentpattern of the philology and discover some new information from the cognitivelinguistics—metaphor and metonymy. From the point of view of the semantic infectionin meaning system, we find that Duanzhu and Yizheng noticed the mutual influencesbetween words in the same semantic field. From the perspective of senses matchedwith examples, we explore the mutual effects between them. At the same time, wemainly focus on these differences of extended meaning between DuanZhu andYiZheng and analyse the lexicological value. In the end, we propose that we shouldmake fully use of the principle of sememe in lexical semantics for dictionarycompilation, make up the lacked parts of extended meanings in the contemporarydiachronic Chinese dictionary, and improve the system of extended senses and graspthese principles, including of mutual effect between sense and example, generalization, the differrece between the meaning of a word in a context and in dictionaries. The fourth chapter illustrates the contrastive study of these methods of discribing contribution of extended senses between DuanZhu and YiZheng. We mainly observethe models of distribution of old and new senses from two aspects of synchronic andthe diachronic change of semantic evolution. Of course, the distribution modes of theseextended senses, in a way, are also to reflect the research condition of extended senses. But the research of semantic evolution is still in the stage of traditional philology, lacking of system, so it also has its historical limitations, which also provides us withspace for thinking about how to improve the theoretical level of lexical semantics. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part. We review and summarize the paper, inthe meanwhile, point out some deficiencies and make a prospect of future research.
