This thesis studies creating environment in Chinese flower-and-bird painting and aims to gain insight into the effect and impact of creating environment on flower-and-bird painting. Through comparison of works of Xu Wei, Zhu Da and Chen Hongshou and the writer’s painting experience, this thesis discusses the meaning of creating environment in flower-and-bird painting.Artistic conception is the essence of Chinese painting. Chinese artists avail creating environment to personate things in nature, express emotion and desire.Actually, the form and technique of expressing artistic conception are not related too much. Painting in elaborate style and freehand brush work are only different in techniques. What is important is that the painter is creating a poetic world and in the meantime, revealing the true value and meaning of life. The concept of Chinese and western art is different, but the aesthetical standard of many Chinese people are influenced by Western concept nowadays. However, the real charm of Chinese painting is not in recording the real natural things but pursuing and exploring the truth of life. We need to inherit traditional art concept and express the real painting language of Chinese painting when pursing innovation. The study of artistic conception will let us to have a better understanding of the nature of Chinese painting.
