Lesson study is a process in which a group of teachers collaboratively create the teaching plans, observe the teaching procedures, solve the problems in their teaching to perfect the teaching process and methodology of a lesson. This research aims to promote the development of the students’ teaching ability in normal schools by means of lesson study.The author guided 8 students majoring in English to organize a lesson study group and perform two rounds of lesson study, aiming to deal with the problems in the students’ teaching practice. To develop the students’ understanding of teaching and to improve the their teaching ability, the author and the English majors used the textbooks of grade 4 and 5 for the lesson study in which they cooperatively made the teaching plans, observed the class, modified the teaching plan and taught the class with the revised plan. During the process, the author made a detailed record of the whole lesson study process and collected some other types of data to attempt to find out an efficient way to develop the students teaching abilities. By analyzing the data from two round lesson studies, the author observes the students’ changes in their abilities of understanding English text, teaching plans, teaching knowledge and the development of their cooperation ability. The major findings of the study are summarized as following:First, though comparison of the students’ teaching plans before and after the two round lesson studies, the researcher finds that the students can set appropriate objects of each lesson, create a complete teaching plan and various and efficient teaching activities, train the pupils’ reading abilities by teaching the text as a whole.Second, by analyzing the data from six class observations, the researcher finds that the students make great progress in teaching abilities in class. The students can use proper teaching languages in class, can organize each activity properly and can deal with all kinds of emergency cases correctly.Finally, by analyzing the students’ teaching reflections and QQ essays, the researcher finds the students develop their cooperation ability step by step in the lesson study.
