On The Characteristics And Influence Of Naples' Biography

Cornelius Nepos is a biographer in the late Roman Republic. He writes many biographies. Until now only an On Foreign Generals and two Roman biograpgies and some fragments in Latin Historians are remaining. His works contain a wealth of biographical concepts.In the works,the author divides historical figures into two categories,according to their different professions.It is worth noting that Nepos is focused on the education of history. His works contain a lot of historical knowledge,enriched the content of the biography. The concepts of biographical in Nepos’ works represent outstanding achievement in the Roman Repbulic and have a far impact. This paper will focus on studying Nepos’ biographical concepts, characteristics and influence, using historical method and comparative history.This thesis includes three parts, which are introduction, text and conclusion.Part one is introduction. It introduces the research status of this problem in domestic and international academic area and discusses the influence of this research. Part two is the text, which includes four sections.Section one mainly analyzes the backgrounds Nepos’ biography concepts in order to quest the origin of biographical concepts. From the backgrounds of Roman Republic, this section analyzesthe origin of Nepos’biographical concepts; By the classical tradition in history, this section explores these ideas which promote generating of biographical concepts; From the origin and develop of the classical tradition in biography and experiences of the author, this section analyzes the origin of Nepos’ biographical concepts. Section two is the focus of this article. This section is mainly analyzes the content of biographical, based on Nepos’ works. Firstly, From political and military activities, anecdotes and historical teaching, we analyze the connotation of Nepos’ biographical concepts. Secondly, From his works, we explore the contradiction and confusion in Nepos’ bographical concepts.Section three is the core of this article. This section mainly analyzes the characteristics of Nepos’ biographical concepts, by historical methods and comparative history. From the obvious comparative concepts, the outstanding political and military consciousnes, the moral values, the clear fate thoughts, pay attention to historical function, which reveals the characteristics of Nepos’ biographical concepts. Section four mainly discusses the influence of Nepos. Byanalyzing the causes of Nepos’ biographical concepts and its characteristics, reveal the status and influence of Nepos and his works, this paper analyses the subject from an angle which combining the macro and micro. The third part is the conclusion. It is the summary of the text and summarys the contents and the significants of the research. Based on this/we get some implications. As a historian, he should study the history in the perspective of the macro and micro, and put the problems into the long developments of history.so he can deepen the understanding of the thing and enrich the achivement of research.
